Transitional Sovereignty Council Vice President, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo has met with Envoy of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Ismail Wais in his office at the Presidential Palace on Thursday.
The meeting addressed the joint efforts of IGAD and Sudanese stakeholders to improve the political situation in Sudan, as well as the implementation of the peace deal in South Sudan.
Wais thanked Sudan’s leadership, which chairs IGAD, for playing an instrumental role in securing peace and stability in South Sudan. Sudan’s trust- and confidence-building efforts, he said, are a key force in forging a unified government and national and state parliaments.
He noted that the South Sudan peace deal is facing challenges as far as the implementation of security arrangements is concerned, while praising Sudan’s leadership for its practical suggestions in this regard. He also stressed that Dagalo’s visits helped resolve numerous complications, as has a Sudanese technical team that was sent to help integrate troops.
Wais said he wished to inform Sudan’s leadership about the state of affairs in South Sudan, and particularly that the People’s Liberation Movement has evacuated its seats in all security mechanisms.
“It is important for Sudan’s leadership to intervene to assist South Sudan’s leaders to move forward with the implementation of the peace agreement,” he said.
“We held a very productive, fruitful and encouraging discussion,” Wais said. “I’m confident that as long as Sudan chairs IGAD, the peace agreement will succeed.”
