MEDIA STATEMENT
In a flagrant and grave violation of international humanitarian law, a Turkish-made Akinci drone operated by the Muslim Brotherhood army carried out a treacherous terrorist attack targeting the Al-Zuruq and Gurair areas in North Darfur State, constituting a full-fledged war crime that reflects a deliberate policy of targeting civilians and vital infrastructure.
The drone directly bombed Al-Zuruq Hospital, resulting in its complete destruction and killing more than 64 innocent civilians, including medical staff who were providing essential services in the area. This hospital was the only medical facility providing healthcare to thousands of residents, its targeting constitutes a double crime against civilians and against their fundamental right to treatment and life.
In Gurair area, the same drone targeted the local market at peak hours, resulting in the killing of dozens of civilians, including women and children, as the victims are being counted. The market was completely burned with people inside it, in a brutal scene that reflects the deliberate targeting of civilians’ sources of livelihood and the systematic terrorization of the people.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) strongly condemn these heinous crimes and denounce the cowardly acts of the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood army, which continues to carry out deliberate attacks against unarmed civilians in blatant defiance of all international laws and humanitarian conventions, foremost among them the rules protecting civilians, medical facilities, and marketplaces.
While our forces strongly condemn the questionable international silence surrounding these repeated violations against civilians in Darfur and Kordofan, they call on the international community, the Quad, and the United States of America to issue clear and explicit condemnations of the systematic crimes of genocide committed by this army, and to fully uphold their legal and moral responsibilities to protect civilians.
The RSF calls for the immediate opening of an independent international investigation into these crimes, holding all those responsible for issuing and carrying out the bombing orders from the “Port Sudan gang,” and the imposition of urgent deterrent measures to ensure the protection of civilians.
The RSF also affirms that they fully reserve their legitimate right to respond, will not remain idle in the face of these blatant violations and attacks against civilians, and will take all necessary measures to protect and defend them.
