MEDIA STATEMENT
In a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), operating under the control of the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood, carried out an aerial bombardment today targeting a marketplace in the city of El Daein, the capital of East Darfur State. The attack resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries among innocent civilians, most of them women and children. This crime reflects a deliberate targeting of civilians and a blatant disregard for the obligation to protect the civilian population during armed conflicts.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) strongly condemn this horrific crime committed by the SAF against innocent and defenseless civilians. Targeting markets and civilian sites frequented by people in their daily lives constitutes a clear violation of the rules of international humanitarian law and directly contravenes the fundamental principles of civilian protection during military operations. This attack also constitutes a full-fledged war crime, particularly as it targeted a purely civilian site with no military presence.
Our forces affirm that committing such crimes, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, reveals the perpetrators’ disregard for the sanctity of human life, religious and humanitarian values. It further reflects a systematic pattern of targeting civilians and threatening the stability and security of local communities.
We call on the international community, relevant United Nations mechanisms, and regional and international human rights and humanitarian organizations to condemn these grave violations and take urgent action to open independent and transparent investigations into this crime. Those responsible must be held fully accountable whether they issued the orders or carried them out in accordance with international humanitarian and human rights law.
The RSF reiterates its full solidarity with the people of El Daein and the families of the victims, and affirms its commitment to continue its efforts to protect civilians and prosecute the perpetrators of these crimes among the leaders of the criminal organization known as the Islamic Movement, so that they do not escape justice.
